LIFE
Amadi was born into the highest family of the highest clan. His mother was a brilliant woman--the daughter of Kangee's youngest sister who was brilliant in her own right. A majority of the Garbo viewed his position as one of the highest esteem and privilege. In reality, the young Amadi was very carefully instructed and guided in the direction his clan thought most efficient with little or no regard or consideration given for the thoughts and feelings of the boy himself. The young Amadi felt stifled and unappreciated. He believed himself more capable than the tasks he was given.
Still, the boy was not nearly as offended by the treatment he received as he was by the treatment of his mother. For years Amadi watched as his father took credit for the brilliance of his mother. he came to believe that the man would never have amounted to anything without his stolen achievements and borrowed glory. Yet these things made no difference in the treatment of his mother, in fact, Amadi suspected his father would have treated her better if only she were less brilliant than he. The man demanded the use of her gifts all the while abusing her for possessing them.
The boy tried to remedy the treatment of his mother but made no progress in the matter as the Garbo believe the duty of the wife is to follow and support the husband in all of his endeavors. Her willingness to display her brilliance was seen as an insult to her husband thus making his abuse of her tolerable to his clan. The woman was not allowed to leave the clan lands of her husband but she did succeed in sending her son to the homelands of her mother to be raised in the knowledge of the Velius rather than the brutality of the Noaz.
Amadi was sentenced to "forced retirement" by the elders of the Garbo after refusing to turn away clan members and refusing to fall back under elder rule himself. His death was meant to put an end to the movement toward valuing personal choice which Amadi started when he defied the elders and left Luxman. The reaction of the clan members varied from outright disgust and dissent to pained understanding to approval (mainly among the Noaz). The Garbonian society was not prepared to face its values in such a way and this caused many people to leave their homes and join the Amadios.
DEATH
The assassination of Amadi was performed in an unusual manner. The elders needed it to be public in order for the common people to understand that resisting authority was not permitted no matter your status. However, they could not risk Amadi finding a way to escape their judgment. If he found some inventive way to save himself the elders would find that public opinion viewed them as contemptibly week. If this happened it was highly unlikely that even the great Kangee would be able to hold onto his position as elder. They must successfully retire Amadi or retire themselves. Kangee himself prepared a mixture that would paralyze Amadi yet allow him to remain awake with his eyes open. The elders believed it was important for the people to see that he was still alive and yet unable to change his fate. Amadi was placed into a prepared watercraft and took his voyage down the river on a very clear and still day. At the falls, when the river split, his craft was turned toward the 'diving gullet' and plunged down into it without so much as a twitch or sound from Amadi. The elders declared their assassination a success and returned to what they thought would be their previously existing world.
